JOB TITLE: Lead Audio Engineer (A1)
REPORTS TO: Program Manager - Staffing
FLSA STATUS: Full-Time, Exempt, Salaried
Job Summary:
The Lead Audio Engineer (A1) owns day-to-day audio excellence for our clients’ studio—maintaining and evolving audio infrastructure, ensuring consistent sound quality across live and recorded productions, and serving as lead mixer for live programs on a Yamaha CL5 (or equivalent). This role partners closely with Production and Engineering and supervises A2s/audio assistants during productions.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises and directs A2s / Audio Assistants while on production
Key Responsibilities:
Studio Audio Support (Infrastructure & Readiness)
Oversee the studio audio system end-to-end, keeping it maintained, documented, and production-ready for daily use and show requirements.
Support core audio and comms components (e.g., console/stage boxes, monitoring, wireless systems, intercom/IFB) by coordinating repairs, firmware updates, labeling, inventory, and configuration changes.
Proactively identify risks (RF conflicts, mic availability, routing gaps, monitoring issues) and implement improvements to keep the studio operating at a high standard.
Live Mixing & Production Support (A1 Lead)
Serve as Lead Audio / A1 for live and live-to-tape productions, operating the digital audio console and delivering a clean, consistent mix for program, records, and monitoring.
Execute mic and IFB workflows for on-camera speakers/guests: mic selection, placement, gain staging, RF coordination, and fast troubleshooting during takes/segments.
Coordinate with the Show Producers, Director and Video Engineering on routing, timing, and show workflows during rehearsals, show, and wrap.
Provide real-time problem-solving during productions, escalating and coordinating cross-functionally as needed.
Team Leadership (A2 / Audio Assist Supervision)
Lead, assign, and supervise A2s / audio assistants during productions, including stage patching, mic management, battery swaps, RF scanning, comms support, and troubleshooting.
Establish consistent operating standards for show days (checklists, labeling, stage plots, mic packs, spares, and turnaround expectations).
Audio Post-Production Support
Provide audio post support as needed, including dialogue cleanup, mix balancing, and stem/layback preparation using Pro Tools (or equivalent) and common audio restoration tools/workflows.
Works closely with the greater studio audio team to be consistent with audio standards created by senior audio manager.
Collaborate with Producers/Editors to meet creative briefs and delivery requirements, troubleshooting audio issues efficiently through post.
Quality Control & Collaboration
Establish and uphold audio quality standards across productions (consistency, intelligibility, loudness targets where applicable, noise control) and maintain a strong “broadcast-ready” bar.
Align audio plans with producers and engineering partners (inputs/outputs, comms, playback, deliverables) and confirm readiness before each production.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Strong proficiency with digital audio consoles (e.g., Yamaha CL5 or equivalent) and studio routing practices.
Be proficient in navigating and adjusting Dante audio networking workflows.
Be proficient in using Sure audio workbench software.
Be proficient in using Clearcomms communication systems.
Working knowledge of post-production audio workflows and tools such as Pro Tools (or equivalent).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with staff, on-site crews, cross-functional teams, and leadership.
Ability to work on-site full-time (this is not a remote or hybrid position)
Education and Experience:
8+ years of professional experience in live sound, broadcast, or studio production audio.
Proven ability to lead and coordinate on-site crews (A2s/assistants), communicate clearly under pressure, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Hands-on expertise with microphones (lavs/handhelds), RF best practices, gain staging, signal flow, monitoring, and troubleshooting under live conditions.
A high-level understanding of electrical systems and wiring as it pertains to audio equipment.
Demonstrated experience in live sound mixing and/or broadcast/corporate studio production audio, including leading a show mix.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting intercom/IFB workflows and integrated studio comms as part of audio operations.
Experience improving and maintaining studio audio systems over time (process, documentation, upgrades).
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Ability to work in a studio environment around production equipment; may include lifting/carrying gear cases, standing for extended periods, and moving between stage/control room locations.
This position may require the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Must be able to operate various electronic devices
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, in-person position at our client’s video production studio near Redmond Ridge in Redmond, WA. The role involves working in both office and studio settings. The studio generally operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the days and hours of this position may vary week-to-week and require occasional work during off-hours or weekends to support production schedules, shipments, or emergency maintenance. Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay range for this role is $110,000-$135,000 annually. Compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position, and the Company reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
